2:30 p.m. update by Hawaii County Civil Defense
The Hawaii Fire Department reports that the brush fire in the Green Sands Subdivision in Ka’u continues to burn and remains approximately 80% contained at this time.
Fire and emergency personnel are on scene and working to extinguish the fire and will remain on scene throughout the evening and night. All highways and major roadways remain open however some roads within the subdivision are closed and limited to local traffic only.
Due to the damage to residential water systems in the Green Sands Subdivision, a water tanker will be available at the Green Sands Park from 5 p.m. this afternoon through 8 p.m. tonight for potable water needs. The Waiohinu water spigot is also open and operational for water needs. With the improvement in fire conditions along the Kaalualu Road residents that would like to repair their water lines and systems are approved and encouraged to do so.
